Today's Gospel: Luke 9:51-56
I recently attended Mass at a new-to-me parish. The priest convicted us with his sermon when he asked, “When have you suffered for Christ?” This question gave me pause. I’m not sure about you, but I would like to stay as far away from suffering as possible. But should that be my attitude as a Catholic?
Most days, I consider it is suffering if I can’t find a snack at that slow energy hour of 2 p.m. But true suffering? I suffered watching my father take his last breath. I suffered knowing I was not there with my mom when she did the same. I suffered watching my husband bury his brother. Loss, grief, heartache, and pain are all part of this pilgrimage to heaven, and I know that more suffering is in store.
The apostles put themselves in danger for Christ; they faced openly hostile crowds, jail, and persecution. “I will follow you wherever you go.” That is easy to do when the path is smooth and our days are easy. Are we willing to do the same when others ridicule us for our faith? When we risk losing friends or status?
Ponder:
When is a time that you have suffered for Christ? Are you willing to follow Him wherever He leads you?
Pray:
Jesus, give us the faith to follow You wherever You lead. Please help us to endure the sufferings of earth, knowing that we can join them to Your suffering on the cross.
