Today's Gospel: Luke 10:25-37

“And who is my neighbor?”

This question posed to Jesus by the scholar of the law in today’s Gospel is as relevant today as it was then. As Christians, we have many morals and standards we uphold to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to God, but how do we perceive others who may not share our values and beliefs? Are they equally as deserving of our time, aid, and encouragement? Jesus thought so.

In biblical times, Samaritans were seen as enemies of the Jews, so Jesus making a Samaritan the helper in this story speaks volumes. It highlights the truth that mercy must not be limited to those we like or get along with, but transcend our differences to see even our enemies as neighbors worthy of care.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan is deeper than merely urging us to be helpful and kind. The robber’s victim personifies our own spiritual poverty and the good Samaritan’s pity reflects the mercy Jesus offers to us. He picked us up, healed our wounds, and paid our room and board in His Father’s house. The question we are left with is are we willing to pass it on?

Ponder:

What in prayer or deed can you do to show mercy to those who are different from yourself?

Pray:

Jesus, You illustrate Your mercy in the Parable of the Good Samaritan. May we never forget that it was You who found us destitute on the roadside and did not hesitate to pick us up. Increase Your mercy in us, Lord, that we may do the same for others.
