Today's Gospel: Matthew 21:33-43

In today’s Gospel, Christ predicts His death by through a parable describing the rejection and killing of a vineyard owner’s son. He then cites Psalms 118:22:

“The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.”

In the following verse, Christ reminds us it is also noted that, rather than a message conveying fear, He as the cornerstone is marvelous in God’s eyes! We are instructed to rejoice and be glad.

I had to research what a cornerstone is. I found it’s a foundational piece of a building, usually the largest stone in the building, which is placed first, and then the rest of the building is structured around it. It has to be strong and without blemish to support the tremendous weight it holds. Christ is therefore our place of security and safety. He is the one to whom we should run when times get tough, our fortress and refuge.

Ponder:

What struggle in your life do you need to offer up to Jesus’ firm strength?

Pray:

Jesus, thank You for being the solid cornerstone on which we can build our lives. Your strength helps make us strong.
