Discover the importance of persevering in prayer and how God's perfect gifts, especially the Holy Spirit, guide us toward holiness and eternal life.

Today's Gospel: Luke 11:5-13

Jesus responds to the disciples’ request to teach them how to pray. After sharing the Lord’s Prayer, He encourages them with a story of persistence—knocking until the door is opened, asking until the answer is given. Jesus reminds us that prayer is not about getting everything we want, but about remaining in constant communication with our heavenly Father.

Jesus points out:

“If you who then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”

As God’s children, we can be certain He is a good Father. Unlike earthly parents who sometimes make mistakes or give imperfectly, God’s generosity is always perfect. He gives what is truly best for us—especially the gift of His Holy Spirit.

That Spirit brings wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and awe of the Lord. These gifts are more valuable than any earthly blessing, for they ground us in God’s truth and guide us toward holiness. They equip us to persevere, endure, and remain faithful in the face of trial.

Yet God’s “good gifts” don’t always look like what we expect. We may pray for one outcome, but He sees beyond our limited perspective. He is not in the business of wish-granting. His deepest desire is our salvation—our sanctity that leads us to eternal life with Him. That, if we think about it, is the greatest gift of all.

So how do we persevere in prayer? By showing up, day after day, knocking at the door of heaven with trust. God will always give what we need, and in His timing. We ask, seek, knock—not to change His heart, but to open ours.

Ponder:

Reflect on how you’ve persevered in prayer—and if nothing comes to mind, start by listing simple ways you can begin.

Pray:

Heavenly Father, thank You for being the giver of every good gift. Teach me to persevere in prayer, trusting that You will always provide what I truly need. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, and guide me with wisdom, courage, and love so I may walk in Your will each day.

Pray Together:

Review the Gifts of the Holy Spirit together as a family. Then, create a chart where each person lists the gifts they feel they embody most and those they hope to strengthen.
