Reflect on the meaning of being blessed through the lens of today's Gospel, emphasizing holiness and the call to observe God's Word, inspired by the Blessed Mother.

Today's Gospel: Luke 11:27-28

I recently spoke with someone who referred to an experience by saying “it was a blessing.” She clarified, saying it was “amazing.” But when referring to the people involved, again she said they were a “blessing."

Today, we hear a woman in the crowd yell at Jesus,

“Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.”

She must've gotten caught up in the emotion. Have you ever been caught up in the emotion of something and blurted, “You’re amazing!”? "Blessed” is a lot more than just “amazing.” It means that the person who is “blessed” has been blest or favored by God.

We've heard Jesus speak about being blessed in other places, most notably in the Beatitudes. In the Sermon on the Mount, He tells the crowd the poor are blessed in spirit; blessed are those who mourn, the meek, the merciful . . .” He is telling them that those people are especially favored. “Blessed” has another meaning--that those people are holy. They are set apart. He is telling us how to be saints.

When Jesus responds to the woman saying, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it,” He is also reframing the conversation. We aren't only talking about someone who is amazing or who has been favored by God – although she was; we are talking about someone who is holy. More than that, Jesus tells us that to be holy, we must hear the Word of God and observe it.

We know that the woman who carried Jesus in her womb and nursed Him was, indeed, holy. She heard the Word of God and observed it. That is why we call her the Blessed Mother.

Ponder:

Who are the people in your life whom you would call blessed? What do you mean by that? What makes them blessed?

Pray:

Dear Lord, we ask for Your Grace to be holy; to be set apart; to be blessed, like Your Blessed Mother. May we always hear Your Word and observe it as Mary did.

Pray Together:

Pray with the Ten Commandments and choose one to observe in a special way this week. See how it makes you holy. Pick another one for next week, and so on.
