Explore the challenge of authentic parenting over public perception. Discover how to cultivate a meaningful family life focused on inner values and simplicity.

Today's Gospel: Luke 11:37-41

Peer pressure continues into the adult world, and it is in no greater force than in the parenting sphere. The courage and energy required to parent our children with intention and integrity rather than making choices that receive outward praise can be overwhelming at times. I confess I am a repeat offender of “public-parenting” my kids, not because I thought whatever gesture or action was actually impactful on their lives, but because I wanted to keep the peace or seek approval from my fellow parents. Jesus and my children see right through me.

Jesus wants more for us; He wants authentic living rather than proper living. If we focus our efforts on having picture-perfect moments for our children, properly behaved sidekicks to our adult outings, or family lives that hide any semblance of conflict or chaos, then we have also left no reflective energy to work on what’s “within.” Appearance is a distraction to what the Lord has to offer our families: authentic and simple lives where “everything will be clean.”

On the contrary, when we lead lives with humble hearts rather than the upkeep of mirages, our values align with our lives, and we can surrender the exhaustion that comes from playing games, complicating matters, and image maintenance. Instead, our hearts stay close to the Lord’s will for our lives, and our actions, example for our children, and the way we spend our hours naturally fall in step with a God-filled life. On the other side of messy kitchens, loud children, and courageous refusals to follow the mainstream awaits a beautiful, blessed life.

Ponder:

Is there an aspect of your family life where the Lord is asking you to focus less on "cleaning the outside of your cup?"

Pray:

Dear God, make our hearts simple and clean. Reveal for us throughout this day the ways we complicate our lives, and where we choose appearance over our authentic selves. Grant us the courage to follow You.

Pray Together:

Brainstorm your family rules. Pray through each one, erasing the ones that are for outside appearances only. Then, in the empty space, add one new rule that incorporates sacrificial giving.
