Today's Gospel: John 1:35-42
This Gospel passage, at first glance, has more questions than answers. Jesus goes first when He asks: “What are you looking for?” The disciples, however, only answer Jesus with another question, “Where are you staying?” Both questions seem fair enough, but neither gets answered directly. Can the disciples answer this question? Do we, as disciples, ever know what we are truly looking for? We only know the One whom we are following, and our hope is anchored to a deep trust in our Lord. The disciples want to know where Jesus is headed, and He, too, does not answer even though He does know this answer. Rather than share with words, Jesus instructs the disciples to “come and you will see.” With this instruction, He answers both questions. The disciples will see quite literally where Jesus is staying, but by following Jesus throughout His life, they will also come and see what it is they are looking for. Jesus is not someone whom can only be ascertained through reading and learning. We are not meant to be scholars of Jesus, but followers. We must not only watch, but experience His lessons, actions, and will for our life. May the answer “come and see” be enough to bring peace to the anxieties, hesitations, and questions we have about making the choice to be disciples. With peace and trust, may our steps follow our Lord into the beautiful unknown.
Ponder:
Am I willing to experience what Jesus has to offer my life, even if His will is not made immediately clear?
Pray:
Lord, grant us courage to follow You wherever You lead us. May we have the strength to say yes to our faith journeys without knowing the answers, and the will to experience all that You invite us to on this day.
