Today's Gospel: Luke 12:1-7
Relationships are hard. It’s a simple truth. No matter if they are new relationships or old ones from years ago, there will inevitably come a time when you don’t agree on something. You may need to address difficult feelings, defend yourself from accusations, or question the sincerity of others. The temptation to ignore or distance yourself from each other may be very strong. In some cases, you become incredibly sad or guilty for feeling that way, especially if these feelings are towards family or longtime friends. You never thought this kind of situation would happen, but it does.
In every family and friend group, social circle, or greater community, there will always come a time when relationships are tested. In Luke’s Gospel today, Jesus wisely reminds us that it is easy to turn on one another in the midst of disagreement, to be hypocrites to the very unity we are supposed to be preserving. We all know the dangers of gossip, yet it happens. We know envy and jealousy are terrible feelings to have, yet we’ve all been there. We aren’t perfect.
God knows we aren’t perfect. He also knows we are able to reflect, learn, and change for the better. Whether in our private lives or in public, let us all lead with love. We can overcome disagreements and make relationships stronger. We can form healthy communities based on understanding and empathy. We can unite as a people who want the best for each other. Who wouldn’t want that?
Ponder:
Is there something heavy on your heart? Is there a disagreement that has wedged itself between you and those you care about? Lead with love today and seek understanding.
Pray:
Heavenly Father, through the intercession of St. Ignatius of Antioch, patron saint of Catholic unity, help me to lead with love in my relationships, to listen and understand, and to find the courage to lead by example,
