Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 17:9a, 10-13
We like to think that seeing is believing, but we often find ourselves blinded by our own beliefs. In today’s Gospel, the disciples have just seen the transfiguration and yet they still have questions. “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
Only when Jesus explained that Elijah had already come did they connect the dots. The prophesies they’ve known all their lives suddenly made sense. The light bulb went off. Of course, it was John the Baptist!
How many times have we realized something so simple that we were actually surprised? We put our palm to our forehead and look up at the sky, almost as if we are saying, “God, why did it take me so long?”
Life is much simpler than we make it. Sometimes, we place fear ahead of our trust in the Lord. We may not be ready to accept what is in front of our face, even when other people point it out to us. We may be blind to all the good things around us because, somehow, we believe they don’t exist or we don’t deserve them.
Let us all focus on gratitude today and in the days ahead. What better way to celebrate the season than to enjoy what we have had all along!
Ponder:
What are you grateful for? Over the next week, list at least three things you are grateful for each day. Challenge yourself by listing new ones each day!
Pray:
Heavenly Father, through the intercession of St. Lucy, patron saint of blindness, help me find joy in each day. Help me be grateful for all I have. Help me bring comfort to those who feel unworthy.
