Discover how to confidently discuss faith with your children and others, relying on the Holy Spirit for guidance in challenging conversations.
Today's Gospel: Luke 12:8-12
Though the Church teaches that parents are the primary educators of their children, when it comes to difficult questions kids might ask about our culture or our faith, a lot of us get nervous. We fully believe what the hurch teaches, but we struggle with the thought of defending those teachings in the face of our kids’ questions, especially when they are argumentative or skeptical. The same fear can set in when non-Catholic family or community members ask why we do certain things or why we hold certain beliefs.
Today’s Gospel is a comforting reminder that we are not left to defend the faith on our own. Whether we’re talking to our kids, our in-laws, or our neighbors, the Holy Spirit is here to teach and guide us in our conversations. For an introvert like me, who likes to plan out my responses before I say them aloud, Jesus’s reminder not to worry is especially helpful. His assurance that the Holy Spirit will give me the right words “at the moment” removes the need for all that preparation. I need only to trust that the Holy Spirit will come when I call upon Him, and that He will assist me in speaking the truth.
Ponder:
Am I avoiding discussing the faith with my children and others out of fear?
Pray:
Come, Holy Spirit, and help me to speak the truth to my children and others with courage and conviction.
Pray Together:
When your children have difficult questions about the faith, invite them to pray with you to the Holy Spirit. Encourage them to always rely upon the Holy Spirit to help teach and guide them.
