Today's Gospel: Luke 10:1-9
In today’s Gospel, Jesus sends His disciples out into the world “like lambs among wolves.” This feeling of being surrounded by unfriendly enemies of the Christian faith is all too familiar to us today. Sometimes it can feel like every time we try to talk about the good news of the Gospel, a wolf appears to destroy our charitable dialogue with vitriol and scorn. It can be tempting to remain silent, assuming that any effort to evangelize is a waste of time.
Jesus reminds us that this is not the case when He says,
“If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.”
In other words, whenever we reach out to another person with the peace of Christ, some good comes of it, either for us or for the other person. We are simply called to spread the Good News, not to worry about how other people receive it.
Our focus, therefore, should not be on whether our interactions spark a conversion or even dispel misconceptions. Rather, we can make our gestures of peace with confidence, knowing that our Lord will always use our efforts for the good.
Ponder:
Whom can I share the peace of Christ with today?
Pray:
Lord, help me to resist the temptation to avoid evangelization and grant me the courage to speak the truth despite the wolves.
