Reflection by Connie Beckman

Today's Gospel: Luke 18:9-14

Sometimes, I am like that Pharisee, convinced of my own righteousness. I think I am a sinner, but at least I am not as bad as that drug addict or that poor homeless person or, God forbid, like that very corrupt and dishonest elected official.

Thankfully the Holy Spirit gradually pierces myself self-righteous pride. In my quiet prayer time, I call out, “O, God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” The Holy Spirit speaks softly in my heart and whispers, “There but for the grace of God go I.”

By taking advantage of the sacrament of Reconciliation often, I become less judgmental and more compassionate. However, I am work in process. It helps me to remember to be kind to everyone I meet for unknown to me they could be fighting a difficult battle.

Ponder:

How about smiling at the clerk at the grocery store today? She could be having a very bad day, and your smile just might help her get through the day.

Pray:

Jesus, help me today to be more kind, a little more patient with my family and coworkers. Show me how to love those who are having a difficult day.
