Today's Gospel: Luke 12:39-48

Flying is my least favorite thing, but being in new places and meeting new people is one of my favorite things—see my dilemma. For many years, I allowed my fears to overrule my desire to go where God wished to send me. A false sense of thinking I controlled my destiny by staying put was a clear example of my unwillingness to trust in His perfect plans, especially as it kept me from traveling to speak about Him! I thought ignoring anything seemingly dangerous and playing life safe protected me from my real fear — dying and facing judgment.

My sins are many. I'm pretty sure I offend God by the hour, perhaps by the minute! Knowing sin keeps me from heaven should be enough motivation to make changes. The best place to start? Trusting God and being honest with myself and my weaknesses. How can I be prepared to greet the Lord whenever that time comes?

Lean into the grace of God, prayerfully seek the Spirit’s counsel to reveal any recurring sin, and figure out "frequent flyer" offenses. Sin, even the most minor infractions, separates us from God. When I concentrate on eradicating the things I can, such as using the Lord’s name in vain, uttering lies we convince ourselves hurt no one, or gossiping, I lessen the accountability of sin upon my soul.

Each step toward greater holiness is another way to prepare you better to meet Jesus when that inevitable day comes. One less fear about not being ready and one less obstacle to being who God created you to be. We'll never be worthy to stand before Jesus, but through grace, we can make wondrous changes that bring us closer to Him—simple trust, which gives us hope and helps us not to be caught unaware.

Ponder:

How will you prepare today for the time when the Son of God returns?

Pray:

Lord, may I always be the faithful and prudent steward You find ready to greet You when that day arises. Help me to prepare my heart well by avoiding the near occasion of sin and coming to You often in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
