Reflection by Connie Beckkman
Today's Gospel: Luke 12:49-53
"I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!"
This fire is truly God’s burning love for each of us.
"Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.”
During Jesus' life on earth, He was a sign of contradiction and division even among His own town and some of His relatives. As followers of Jesus and His Church, we, too, at times experience this contradiction and division among our family and society.
The baptism that Jesus speaks of in this passage is His death because from it He will rise, never to die again. Jesus died for all of us because He is Love. At our own Baptism, we die to sin and are reborn to a new life in grace.
Being a follower of Jesus requires each of us to be kind and merciful to those who are not a member of His Body, the Church. We pray for those who persecute us and our faith. We cannot witness to our faith except through God’s grace and love that fills us. Each and every day, we need to ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with an overflowing of love and grace. When we receive His Precious Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, Jesus showers us with His grace. We can’t witness without His grace.
Ponder:
How can I be a shining light for those who need Jesus today?
Pray:
Jesus, my Lord, fill me with the fire of Your love today so I can be a shining light to others.
