Today's Gospel: Luke 13:10-17

This story shows us Jesus’ humility. The woman does not go to Him; He sees her and calls to her. What better reminder is there that Jesus truly cares for us? He calls out and heals this woman who then glorifies God.

Of course, this creates division between the crowd and those who are against Jesus. Jesus is again reminding us that rules do not come before people’s real needs. Jesus does not soften the word “hypocrite” at all. Luke uses the word “humiliated” to describe how Jesus’ adversaries felt.

The divide here seems great. Jesus speaks with love and care to the woman but not to those against Him. The leader says come on the other days to be cured, follow the rules. What a contrast to Jesus. He serves and heals when the need is there not when it is the right time.

I wonder, do we ever find ourselves waiting to ask Jesus for help, healing, or forgiveness? Do we wait until it is the “right” time? This healing tells me that anytime we encounter Jesus it is the right time. Indeed, He may even choose the time. We don’t know if the woman came to be healed or was simply coming to the synagogue since it was the Sabbath.

But Jesus was there and desired to give her health and wholeness and freedom. What else? Dignity. The dignity to be seen and to see others.

Jesus restores all of that and more. Let’s stop waiting and go to Jesus to be restored. He wants to heal us.

Ponder:

What do you want restored in your life? Not for anyone else, for yourself.

Pray:

Jesus, You restored the woman in the synagogue. I humbly ask You now to restore me. I trust in Your mercy.
