Today's Gospel: Luke 1:57-66

John the Baptist’s birth story is quite dramatic. Born to a woman considered barren, his father can’t speak until the baby is given the name John at his circumcision...this baby is the talk of the town out of fear, people wondering about this child. It’s the last line that strikes me, “the hand of the Lord was with him.” Why yes, it was. And that can be said about all of us.

The hand of the Lord is with each and every one of us at all times. Are we called, like John was, to point to Jesus? I think so. And we can do this knowing that the hand of the Lord is on us. Zechariah and Elizabeth knew that the Lord was with them in the birth of their son, John. The people of the town saw it as well, but it made them fearful instead of comforting them. When Zechariah and Elizabeth follow God’s plan, they are free to praise and bless Him. The townspeople are confused, wondering what the child will become.

What can we learn from Elizabeth and Zechariah? To trust God; that following His requests will lead to something that without Him is impossible; to value God’s words rather than people’s opinions.

Ponder:

What does Elizabeth and Zechariah’s trust in God show you? How can you apply that in your life?

Pray:

Lord, help me to see the hand of the Lord on my life. Give me the grace to point others toward You in all I do. Amen.
