Today's Gospel: Luke 13:22-30

In the previous verses in chapter 13 of Luke’s Gospel, Jesus told some parables about the kingdom of God. We’ve all heard the Parable of the Mustard Seed and the Parable of the Yeast. In today’s passage, Jesus goes on to preach about the kingdom in the towns and villages on His way to Jerusalem. People began wondering how many people were going to make it to the kingdom.

Jesus tells them that it will take more than their own strength to get in the gate. We cannot get to heaven under our own power, no matter how hard we try. The Jewish people around Him seem to have been following the Law thinking that is all it takes to get to heaven. It seems their hearts and minds were not in the right place.

“We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.”

They thought that meant intimacy with God. But the master says He does not know them. Why does He not know them? Many had a superficial friendship, not an intimate one.

Jesus goes on to say that many from the “east and the west and the north and the south” will “recline at the table in the Kingdom of God.” He is talking about us, those of us who are not Jewish but indeed follow Christ. We, gentiles, were called last ,and many will be called first to the kingdom. We need to make sure we follow Jesus’ teaching, so that the master says, “I know him, he is mine.” We need to work on that intimacy with God, so our friendship is not superficial. We must strive for that narrow gate. We need to think about that every day. Strive for it every day. Pray for it every day.

Ponder:

Do I strive for that narrow gate every single day?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, help me follow You through that narrow gate. Help me to strive for intimacy with You every single day.
