Today's Gospel: Luke 12:54-59

Many say that the idea of Purgatory does not appear in Sacred Scripture, but today’s Gospel reading clearly alludes to it. It is a reminder that Jesus is the just judge and that what we do not atone for will require compensation before we enter His kingdom:

“You will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”

There is a saying that I love: “If you want heaven, don’t shoot for purgatory . . . you could miss and hit hell.” It is a wise reminder that we cannot become complacent in our journey towards holiness. It can seem like a contradiction to trust in God’s mercy but also be responsible for our actions toward holiness. When we remember that God sees not only our actions but our hearts, it becomes clearer.

If I give of myself to others but hold back, God knows it. Even if to the world I look generous in my action, God knows if I really was. He knows if I complete my penance. He knows if I love with an open heart or hold back. Conversely, God knows when I have given all I have to give (even if it didn’t seem like much). Just like the poor widow, He will judge my heart as well as my actions.

Ponder:

What areas of my life are not lived in holiness? How can I match my heart and my actions?

Pray:

Heavenly Father, You know all things. Please make me unafraid for You to see me as I really am and to reveal my shortcomings to myself.
