Today's Gospel: Luke 13:10-17

In Luke’s Gospel, we see another instance of hypocrisy by the Jewish leaders. Jesus loosens the power of a spirit over a woman who had suffered almost two decades of pain and derision, and the synagogue leaders are most concerned that He healed her on the Sabbath. Isn’t a woman suffering more important than the letter of the law?

I believe this is a huge lesson on mercy. This woman suffered and suffered. The synagogue leaders told the crowd that they should ask for help from Jesus on the other six days of the week, not on the Sabbath. That way, presumably, Jesus would not be tempted to work on the Sabbath. But Jesus is trying to say to them that mercy should be meted out every day of the week. Mercy is more important than the letter of the law. How many times do we need to remind ourselves that mercy is more important than the minutiae of getting things done "the right way?"

Let us practice mercy with our family. Let us show them that they are more important than rules or the little things in life. Let us show Christ’s mercy to the world.

Ponder:

Do I show Christ's mercy to my family?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, help me to model the mercy You showed the poor crippled woman You healed on the Sabbath. I want to see the world through Your eyes.
