Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12a
Today’s Gospel is so fitting for the Solemnity of All Saints because it provides a basic roadmap to heaven. Unlike the Ten Commandments, which mostly tell us what not to do, the Beatitudes explain what we ought to do, and the attitude we ought to have in order to become saints. Those who become saints are not necessarily the followers of Christ with the loudest voices, or the fanciest clothing, or the most innovative ideas. Rather, saints are meek and merciful, humble and peaceful, with a desire for righteousness and a willingness to be persecuted for their faith in Jesus. The many saints canonized by our Church help us to understand that regardless of background or circumstances, it is possible for each of us to achieve sainthood if we rely on God’s grace and follow our Lord’s teachings. Reading the Beatitudes is a wonderful way to keep ourselves on the path that will lead to heaven and to focus our efforts on the things that really matter.
Ponder:
How will you live out the Beatitudes in your life today?
Pray:
Dear Jesus, help me to live out the Beatitudes each and every day. Draw me closer to You so that I might one day enjoy the perfect happiness of heaven.
