Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12a
What a perfect reflection for All Saints Day! Jesus shares the Beatitudes with the crowds during The Sermon on the Mount. There were so many people present to hear Him preach, and they all had to climb up the mountain to be there for it. This is a great metaphor for sainthood. The climb up the mountain is not easy and requires dedication and work to get there.
Beatitudes are guidelines for achieving sainthood. Go through each line and see if you can think of a saint who lived their life accordingly. Is there a common theme you notice among them? Let me help you; none of them are easy!
We can apply the Beatitudes to motherhood as well. One example is, “Blessed are the merciful” (Matthew 5:7). How many times have we been merciful towards our children when they make mistakes? We show them mercy out of love, so they have a better example of what God’s mercy for them looks like. “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9). How many parents break up arguments between siblings or family members to help instill peace in the home? “Blessed are they who mourn” (Matthew 5:4). How many moms have mourned the death of their children? How many moms have mourned their children leaving the Church?
Motherhood can be a path to sainthood, and the Beatitudes are guidelines to help us get there. They are not meant to be easy to follow. We see so many saints who suffered and yet lived lives exemplifying the Beatitudes. Motherhood is not easy, yet it is rewarding to be there for our children and guide them in their faith. Sainthood is not an easy path, but it is worth the climb.
Ponder:
What Beatitude do you struggle living out? Which one comes naturally to you?
Pray:
Lord, be with me as I climb up the mountain towards You. Help me to be an example for my children of a faith-filled life.
