Today's Gospel: Luke 16:1-8

This parable always intrigued me. It seems that Jesus is complimenting a dishonest person. I've heard many different interpretations, and the one that makes the most sense to me is that Jesus is telling us to be smart and quick in acting when we are dealing with the salvation of our souls.

When this steward heard he was going to be fired, because he was acting badly, he took action to try to save himself. He didn't try to justify himself. He knew he was wrong. Some people interpret that the amount of the discount he gave was taken from his commission, not from the money owed to his master, which makes sense, since he was commended by his master.

The lesson we can learn from this parable is that as soon as we realize that we have been acting badly and sinning, we should take action to remedy our misdeeds. First, repent and ask forgiveness in the sacrament of Confession. Then, make penance by “discounting from our commission.” In other words, make sacrifices abstaining from things and actions that are licit, and offer them to erase the penalties of our sins.

We can also use this parable to teach our children that we are all stewards of God's gifts, and we should administer them well. Everything we do wrong, one day will be revealed, so the best we can do is to repent and ask for forgiveness when we are not being good stewards and try to remedy our faults the best we can. They can learn from an early age to make small sacrifices, such as not eating candy one day or helping with household chores without complaining and offer that as a penance for their faults.

Ponder:

How concerned am I about the salvation of my soul? Am I quick to repent when I sin, or do I justify my errors?

Pray:

Mother Mary, help me be a good steward of the gifts the Father has entrusted to me. Help me to quickly see my faults and repent by going to Confession.
