Explore the importance of prioritizing God in our busy lives and how to refocus family activities around faith.

Today's Gospel: Luke 16:9-15

So many different demands vie for our families’ attention these days: sports, music lessons, extracurricular activities, scouts, playdates, and more. We are all faced with the choice between serving God and serving any of these other masters. Sometimes, we neglect our spiritual practices in order to satisfy these lesser, worldly concerns. Maybe we’re tempted to skip Mass so a child can play in an important game, or to avoid undertaking a Friday penance because it’s inconvenient with our activities schedule. We stop praying as a family, or procrastinate on making it to Confession. We let a few little things go, and suddenly, the center of our lives isn’t Christ, but our calendar, filled with appointments that distract us from what we ought to be doing.

Today’s Gospel reminds us of the outcome of serving two masters, which is that we begin to hate one of them. If we continually prioritize other things over God, over time we will begin to show disdain for our Lord and His Church. Surely none of us wants to turn our backs on God so fully that we begin to despise Him! Rather, it is important to continually prioritize our commitments so that God is always at the center. Sports, social media, dance team, scouts, and all the rest can be wonderful things, but only if they do not harm our relationship with Jesus. Whenever there is a choice, we must put God first every time.

Ponder:

Am I serving the Lord or another master? How can I refocus my family’s life on Christ?

Pray:

Lord, help me to always serve You and love You above all things so that I might never turn my back on You and Your Church.

Pray Together:

With your children, think of some new ways to place Christ at the center of your busy schedule. Put them into practice to deepen your spiritual lives.
