Today's Gospel: Luke 17:26-37
When you read today's Gospel, try doing it through the eyes of St. Luke, the faithful and true physician and healer. Today's reading sounds exactly like the advice you might get at your doctor's office. "If you do this, this, and this, and don't do this, bad things could happen. Look what happened to these people!"
The good doctor gives us examples of bad repercussions with the overindulgent people of Sodom, the sinners who didn't make it on to the ark, and even the overly curious wife of Lot! He ends his premonitory declarations with examples of common folks doing normal daily things who will still reap the consequences of bad behavior. No one is immune from bad decision-making.
For us, it's a reminder that we need to keep the end game in sight. We can enjoy the things of today, and even celebrate, but not at the cost of losing sight of what Jesus calls us all to be: saints.
Ponder:
Will the decisions you make today bring you closer to holiness or not?
Pray:
Dear Lord, give me the guidance and wisdom to make good decisions today that will take me closer to my goal of becoming a saint.
