Today's Gospel: Matthew 21:23-27
I prayed and wrestled with this Gospel for many days, asking, “Lord, what are You saying to me?” The one thought I kept coming back to was whether or not the Jewish priests and elders really wanted to hear the truth about Jesus’ authority.
If Jesus had come out and said His authority came from God, would they even have believed it? Would they have been ready to give over their status and their whole lives to follow Him? Or was the question only an excuse to corner Him? The priests and elders did not answer Jesus’ question because they feared the crowds. They didn’t really want to know from where Jesus received His authority.
How often do we come to God with our questions or problems that we really don’t want the answer to if it means we will have to change our lives or do something hard? How often do we fear what other people think, and it prevents us from coming to knowledge of the truth?
Jesus doesn’t want to play games; He wants us to follow Him. He will only give us the truth, but He will also give us the grace to do amazingly difficult things with His help. With God, all things are possible because all authority in heaven and earth is from Him (Matthew 28:18).
Do we want the truth? Do we ask sincerely for Jesus to reveal Himself to us? Or do we want a scripted answer that we formulate our own opinion on? Christ will wait until we are ready to hear it, and then He will come with His power, truth, and authority to heal our souls and cast out demons. Only the truth will set us free.
Ponder:
Where is my heart too afraid to hear the truth? Do I care too much about what other people think?
Pray:
Jesus, You are the way, the truth, and the life. I ask that You bring Your spirit of truth to have authority over my life and show me the way that I should walk.
