Today's Gospel: Luke 17:26-37

We are going about our days, doing the normal stuff, when “Bam!” something hits us. It could be something good or something terrible. Are any of us really ready for those moments when they come?

Just before today’s Gospel passage, Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, and He answered,

“The coming of the kingdom of God cannot be observed . . .” Luke 17:20

He then starts to talk with the disciples about these upcoming days of waiting for the kingdom of God to arrive.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus talks about our ordinary, normal stuff that we do, and how “Bam!” the kingdom of God will be here. How do we prepare for that? In verse 33, Jesus gives us the answer. He says,

“Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it.”

We do need to do our everyday, normal stuff, but it should not be our focus. Day-to-day life is not for saving, but our eternal life is. Keeping our minds, hearts, and focus on God and His kingdom is how we are going to make the “Bam!” something wonderful.

Ponder:

How are you getting ready for the kingdom of God? Does the everyday stuff have more focus in your life?

Pray:

Jesus, please help me to be ready at a moment’s notice and inspire my life now to be something worthy of the kingdom of God.
