Reflection by Colleen Rooney

Today's Gospel: Luke 19:41-44

This is one of the most poignant images of Jesus in the Gospels. I find it heartbreakingly sad. Our Lord is looking at Jerusalem. I imagine Him walking down a road above Jerusalem. From that elevation, He sees the holy city, except it isn’t so holy.

From the days of His ancestor King David, Jerusalem has been the jewel in the crown of Israel, the city where the temple of God resided. God had great plans for Jerusalem and its people. Jesus, the Word made flesh, had come to fulfill the ancient promise spoken by the prophets and proclaimed in Zechariah’s canticle:

”Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and brought redemption to his people. He has raised up a horn for our salvation within the house of David his servant, even as He promised through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old . . . ” Luke 1:68-70

And now, as our Savior looks down upon Jerusalem, He is filled with such a great sadness that He weeps. God weeps.
Sadness is a part of our life in this world. Our Lord shared and continues to share our sorrows. But that is not the end of the story. Through the cross and resurrection, there is hope for a future without sadness.

But how can we comfort the weeping, Christ? Are we helpless?

There are other stories, too. The stories of Veronica, St. Teresa of Calcutta, and mothers who saw the weeping and sorrowful Christ and wiped His face and the faces of all those others in whom they saw Christ. We are not helpless. We, too, can wipe the tears of Jesus.

“Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40

Ponder:

How can we comfort the weeping, Christ?

Pray:

Thank you, Lord, for those beautiful womanly role models who show us how to wipe Your tears. Help us to believe that the small ways we wipe the tears of family, friends, and others brings comfort to You.
