Today's Gospel: Matthew 15:29-37
Today’s Gospel reading is one of the many examples that show the dramatic difference in the disciples before and after they received the gift of the Holy Spirit.
I find it comforting to think about the disciples’ humanity. They were with Jesus day and night, listening to His teachings, witnessing so many miracles, and yet, they still had trouble fully trusting and believing that He could feed the crowd that had come to hear Him speak. Unfortunately, I can relate to that doubt. How often do I try to solve my problems by myself? How often do I worry and stress and not immediately turn to God? I’ve seen God’s amazing work in my life, yet I still find myself not fully believing and trusting.
But then I think of the disciples after Pentecost. They were completely changed—suddenly strong, fearless, and full of faith. The difference in these men is remarkable. Do you ever stop and think how that same life-changing spirit resides within us? How amazing is that? We don’t need to worry, question, or wonder how He can work wonders in our lives.
Dallas Jenkins, director of The Chosen, tells a story that I often think about. When at a low point in his career, he received a message: “It’s not your job to feed the 5,000, it’s only to provide the loaves and fish.” On our own, we can never make the miracle happen. We can’t fix our problems by ourselves. But God can. We just need to believe and trust in Him.
Ponder:
When you share your gifts of the Holy Spirit, do you feel God working through you? It’s an amazing thing to think about how He can use us to reach others.
Pray:
Dear Lord, help me overcome any doubts in my faith. May the Holy Spirit fill me with strength to always believe and trust.
