Today's Gospel: Luke 12:39-48

Occasionally when reading the Gospel verses, I take a little extra time to meditate on the words or phrases that stand out to me, trying to determine what message God wants me to hear.

When I was younger, the first part of today’s passage, about the thief in the night, always made a strong impression. What a powerful image Jesus’ words conjure in our minds. While some parables can be difficult to understand, this one seemed quite clear—we must always be ready because Christ could return at any moment. Am I ready if He returned today? Do I live my life with that in mind?

As I’ve gotten older, the final sentence of today’s passage is the one that catches my attention.

“Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”

God has entrusted a great deal to us, such as the raising of our children or in our chosen vocations. Are we living up to the challenge? Do we use our gifts to lead others to Christ?

No matter which words stand out to you, letting the Gospel readings speak to us is such an incredible gift of our faith.

Ponder:

Take a moment to re-read today’s passage. What words are speaking to you? This simple form of Lectio Divina could be a great activity to try as a family sometime during your day.

Pray:

Dear Lord, today, help me to hear Your message to me, whether in today’s reading, inspired thoughts, or through the people I encounter. Please continue to guide me.
