Today's Gospel: Matthew 11:28-30

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that God invites us to rest in Him. These are soothing words to a mother’s heart, especially this time of year when there’s much to do and time feels short.

At a recent conference, the keynote speaker asked if we knew why God rested on the seventh day. After the suggested answers were dismissed, he said that God rested as an example to us. God didn’t need rest after creation; however, He deliberately performed a human action. He did this so that we – His creation – would be able to do something God does. When we rest, when we are still, we imitate God’s own action.

Jesus, as fully human and fully divine, knows our burden. Sitting in meditation with this scripture during a season of grief reveals the immense value of just resting with God. Whether it’s the ending of a job, a dream you had for the future, or a death in the family, grief drains us mentally, physically, and emotionally. Our world grows heavier and heavier, slowing down until we find ourselves struggling to move.

Whether we’re in a busy season of life or facing the coming holidays stumbling under the weight of grief, Jesus calls us to become dependent on Him. We often think we must do all the things and remain in control, but God rested, so we should rest, too.

Ponder:

Go to Jesus in the tabernacle or the monstrance and lay down your burdens. Allow Him to be near you. Invite Him to draw you closer. Unite your heart with His in love, trust His words, and rest in His presence.

Pray:

Jesus, I lay down my burdens at the foot of Your cross. Unite me to Yourself and help me find rest from all things causing anxiety and grief.
