Reflection by Kathryn Mulderink

Today's Gospel: Matthew 11:28-30

Are you weary? Are you burdened? Are you seeking restfulness? Jesus says,

“Come to me.”

Jesus is always inviting us to come to Him. Why?

Because He is the source of all, and He longs to give to us all that we need. If we are weary and overburdened, He wants to give us rest! And He gives us a rich metaphor:

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart.”

A yoke is fastened over the necks of two animals, not one - Jesus wants to SHARE our burden and show us how to bear it well, with meekness and the wisdom of humility.

The psalm today reminds us that the Lord pardons our iniquities, heals all our ills, redeems our life from destruction, and crowns us with kindness and compassion. All these gifts of grace do not just pour into us, especially if we are dragging the cart of self-reliance and self-will! He can’t force us to take on His yoke, He can’t force Himself into our burden; we must come to Him, open ourselves to His help, and choose to receive all He wants to give.

So we must do our part by acknowledging our need and submitting our wills to His glorious yoke. No matter what burdens our life requires us to bear, we will find rest when we bear them with Jesus.

Ponder:

In what areas of my life am I tempted to rely on my own resources and ideas rather than submit to God's will and receive His help?

Pray:

Lord of heaven and earth, You can do all things. Give me the grace to allow You into every burden, trusting that Your grace lightens every load.
