Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Luke 1:67-79

People must have been amazed at Zechariah’s words. My first thought was that Zechariah had a lot of time to come up with the speech he gave when his son, John, was to be named. Then I remembered that Zechariah didn’t even know if his ability to speak would ever return, so what came out of his mouth came right from the Holy Spirit.

This elderly man, who spent his entire life praying for the Messiah to come, was to become the father of the one who would go before the Lord, and by his words, Zechariah teaches us about faith, hope, and love.

Zechariah tells us that God is faithful. The God of Israel fulfilled his promises: The Savior will come from the house of David; His people will be freed from enemies;  God remembered His covenant and kept the oath He made to Abraham a long time ago.

Just like Zechariah, we can look back and see the faithfulness of God. He does what He says He will do. God has never let us down. As we are confident in God’s faithfulness, we are filled with hope, the hope that the dawn from on high will shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death.

As we look back filled with faith and look forward with hope, we are right in the middle, standing in love. We stand in the love that guides our feet into the way of peace, the love from which the dawn from on high shines upon us.

In His tender compassion, God has set His people free, He raised up for us a mighty Savior. Blessed be the Lord, for He has come.

Ponder:

What has God used in the past year to build your faith in Him? Have you noticed that you were also strengthened in His hope?

Pray:

Father, on this day of busyness, family, gifts, and food, we stop to say thank You. Thank You for what You have done. Thank You for what You will do, thank You for today, and thank You for the gift of celebrating Jesus being with us.
