Today's Gospel: Matthew 10:17-22
One hard lesson I am learning through the years is that motherhood comes with criticism, unsolicited advice, and constant second-guessing. In the beginning, you question the diaper brands, food choices, sleep styles, and the like. You finally land on a decision, share it with another mom who questions your choice, and you’re right back in the loop of doubt and indecision. You survive the infant year and jump into social groups and exposure to technology. Before long comes pressure about education and new daily obstacles for your children. Every time you catch a breath, you have older mothers warn you “Just you wait . . . !”
However, there is grace in this process. As we age, we gain confidence in our ethics and intentions in how we raise our children. God gives us the vocation of motherhood to help develop us as Christian disciples as well. This same skill set of ignoring the voices of critics, remaining steadfast in our discerned choices, and enduring in Christian virtue for our children despite what the world suggests for our time, energy, and thoughts is crucial to success.
Jesus gives us advice for both accounts:
“[D]o not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say.” Matthew 10:19
How did you know to soothe your child on the playground? How did you know how to talk your teenager through a difficult conversation? How did you know to stand up for the faith in a challenging situation? It is through a paradoxical combination of endurance and surrender—endurance in the Lord and surrender to His wisdom. May we anchor ourselves to the Lord today, endure for His cause, and surrender the rest.
Ponder:
Are there parenting questions for which I need to seek the Lord's feedback rather than the world's?
Pray:
Dear Lord, in challenging moments, give me the strength to endure for the sake of Your will and Your glory. In moments of unease, give me the peace to surrender to the Holy Spirit, seeking divine wisdom over all else so that I make act with intention and consistency for the sake of Your Kingdom.
