Daily Gospel Reflection for December 28, 2023

Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today’s Gospel addresses the flight from Bethlehem to Egypt. Joseph is prompted by the Angel Gabriel to flee with Mary and Jesus in the middle of the night to avoid the wrath of Herod. Because he was deceived by the Magi, Herod becomes enraged and persecutes many innocents. The lamentation of mothers can be heard all throughout the kingdom.

As I reflect on today’s Gospel, it prompts me to consider the role we play as parents to protect the innocent. In today’s society, it is harder and harder to shelter our children from the world and its evils. Even television shows geared towards children often reflect messages that go against our faith. When I think of Joseph and Mary fleeing with Jesus to Egypt, I think about how God always provides a plan for us. Without question, Joseph took nothing except his wife and the Son of God and trusted that He would provide.

In today’s modernism, “escaping to Egypt” to protect our children from evils and keep them innocent is becoming harder and harder. We see images of young girls dressed in adult clothing, and even children in the womb are at risk when aborting them becomes acceptable because their conception wasn’t part of the plan.

Today’s Gospel reminds me to trust in God’s plan and that He has a purpose for us. We must as parents protect and honor our covenant with God to instill holy virtues in our children.

In what ways can you trust God will protect the innocent? How can you lean on Him in times of flight?

Pray:

Dear Lord, on the Feast of the Holy Innocents, we pray for those who have been aborted and for our children who are still targeted for their innocence. Help us to trust in Your plan, O Lord, that Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
