Today's Gospel: Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23
When we speak of the Holy Family, we are referring to the family of Jesus, the Divine Son of God; the Blessed Virgin Mary; and Saint Joseph, Jesus' father on earth. We know from the Gospels about the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem and the flight into Egypt and of finding Jesus in the temple. Essentially, we know enough to know this specific feast day celebrates our human family unit using Jesus' family as our example of faith and prayer. It is through their love shown in their family that we learn that prayer and love of God need to become the center of all families. Saint Paul gives advice on family life in Colossians 3:17: "And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." The feast of the Holy Family is a good time to pray for all families, both living and deceased.
Ponder:
What are we doing to promote our own family unit showing the love given to us by Jesus? Are we extending this love to families in our neighborhoods and communities? Are we the example of love that God intends us to be?
Pray:
Dear Jesus, we want to strive to make our family like Yours. We want to be worthy of the love shown to You from Your mother, Mary, and Saint Joseph, your father on earth.
