Today's Gospel: John 1:1-18
“And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory.”
There is a reason that we bow our heads when we say these words in the Angelus prayer or when we make a profound bow to reverence the Incarnation as we recite the Nicene Creed at Mass. It’s because these words are life-changing, history-making, earth-shaking. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. God is with us, Emmanuel.
I’ve said that word “Emmanuel” so often that I sometimes forget what it really means, and I keep it at the surface, a word printed on my Christmas cards, a lyric oft-sung in Advent. But today I want to carry that word with me all day, let it sink deep into my heart. God is with us. God is with me.
What would it mean if we allowed these words to be the lens through which we look at this past year? Where and how and when did you encounter Emmanuel? And what if we choose to carry these words close to our heart and keep them there through the New Year? God is with us.
Ponder:
How do those words change everything?
Pray:
O Emmanuel, Divine Messiah, Baby Jesus born in Bethlehem, I praise You. Thank You for making Your home among us. Please make Your home in my heart.
