Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

\Today's Gospel: Matthew 17:22-27

After years of praying, reading, and studying the Word of God, I still am amazed when I discover something new. How did I miss Simon Peter fetching a coin for his and Jesus' taxes from a fish! The crazy travel required aside, it is a bit tempting to grab a fishing pole and try my luck in the Sea of Galilee.

Peter demonstrates obedience to Jesus even if perplexed by the mission. Relying, surely, on having witnessed Jesus do other miraculous things with fish. He could probably still feel the weight of those nets overflowing with his astounding catch as well as being present for the multiplication of fishes. It reminds me that supernatural faith produces supernatural grace.

Jesus illustrates how to build bridges and pick your battles. It is unnecessary to stand our ground, especially when the circumstances do no harm or break a moral law. What an act of humility. It's that old "time and place" adage, likewise exhibiting how to reserve our energy for more critical issues.

For the sake of my marriage, many times, I have weighed the benefits of being right, being stubborn, or being married. As a mom, I'd like to think I've mastered a "pick your battles" mentality—a helpful frame of mind not just for parenting but in life.

Today's Gospel illustrates for us the virtues of prudence, humility, peacemaking, kindness, and love—all crucial Christian life skills. Following Jesus' example, maybe the next time I notice the toilet paper placed "upside down," I will remember it will work either way. Realize socks will still keep feet warm or dry whether folded or shoved into the drawer. Maybe, I will find fewer tasks landing on my to-do list if I stop trying to get them done all my way.

Ponder:

How can you imitate the virtues (and behaviors) exhibited by Jesus and Peter from today's Gospel within your own home or in your life?

Pray:

Jesus, teach me to trust in your Father's providence as you do. My Lord, help me discern whether it is the time to build a bridge or persist in advocating for what I believe is right.
