Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:17-19

Jesus is trying to explain it is important to not ignore the law of Moses and the prophets and psalms. There has been some confusion among early Christians with some thinking that the mission of the community was to only follow the words of Jesus and ignore those who came before. They were suggesting that it wasn’t necessary to observe the laws of the Old Testament, because Jesus would save them by their faith alone in Him.

Matthew is suggesting here that we need to show the balance. Like Jesus we should show in practice the objective of the Old Law: to attain in people’s lives the practice of love. Jesus says, “I have not come to abolish what was written before, but I have come to fulfill them!”

It seems like a challenge posed by Jesus. Don’t ignore the teachings and laws of Moses and those who came before, but learn from those teachings because they are there to lead us to the message of Jesus: to love others, which Jesus has said is our sole purpose for being here.

Ponder:

How do I best live all of God’s laws, and show Jesus’ love to those around me?

Pray:

Let me be open to your will, God, and the commandments You gave to Moses. Help me live out Jesus’ love for others.
