Today's Gospel: Luke 1:39-56

Leaping hearts for Jesus!

As a seasoned traveler along the road of pregnancy, I exclaim with admiration, “What a woman!” every time I read the Visitation. No wonder Mary was chosen to be the Mother of God.

Each first trimester of my eight pregnancies was full of exhaustion and overpowering morning sickness. Can you pass the saltines, please? There was no way I felt like jumping on a donkey and hightailing to an elderly cousin’s home to serve. How about you? Our Mother Mary was an example of a strong, godly woman ever ready to help others in need. I wonder if she packed crackers for her journey.

When I read and pondered that scripture, my eye caught on the words

“. . . where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit . . . Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."

The faith of these two cousins was as alive as the babies in their wombs. Not only was Elizabeth’s baby leaping for joy, but their hearts were full of joy as well. Mary and Elizabeth were now joined together by much more than blood; now they were joined together in the Holy Spirit. They were each about to give birth to a miracle. The miracles were already growing within them. Mary would birth the Savior Jesus Christ, while Elizabeth would bring forth John the Baptist, who would point to Christ.

Mary went the extra mile for God, for Elizabeth, and for all of us. Her “yes” brought life to the world. Let earth receive her King! Who feels like jumping for joy now?

Ponder:

Have you let the King of Glory come into your heart? What will your yes do for Jesus and the world?

Pray:

Dear Heavenly Father, may my heart always leap for joy when I greet my Lord. May I always be open to the life only He can give, both physically and spiritually.
