Today's Gospel: Mark 7:31-37

“Be opened!”

That seems to be a message I have been hearing lately. Our culture is very isolating, even though right now we have the ability to readily communicate with one another. Is this why we are deaf to most things in our lives, including Jesus?

In today’s Gospel, Jesus had traveled away from the Jewish people and went into the land of the gentiles. These people probably did not know who Jesus was, but instead saw a man of great faith and healing ability. Instead of scoffing at Him, or telling Him he was a liar, they brought a deaf and speechless man to see Him. They must have cared a great deal about this man since they were willing to beg Jesus to help him. Then Jesus took the man away from everyone, where it was quiet. Jesus used the actions of what was believed at the time to have healing powers (touching and spitting), to communicate with the deaf man what He was about to do. As He looked up to Heaven, Jesus groaned. He said, “Be Opened!” and right away the man could hear and speak.

Jesus is so aware of this man’s need to hear and speak, as He is of our need to hear Him and speak to Him. Jesus takes Him away from the crowd, like He wants to take us away from our crowded minds and hearts. He knew the man was deaf, so He groaned, something you can feel through vibration and expression. Even when we are deaf, we can hear Jesus groan. Jesus commands, “Be opened!” and the man can hear and speak, just as Jesus commands us to hear His own healing words. Jesus is so aware of our needs, and all we need to do is listen.

Ponder:

In what ways in your life have you been deaf to Jesus’ words, and how can you ask for His healing touch?

Pray:

Jesus, I am grateful that You are aware of my needs, and I pray that my hearing and speech are opened by Your Word.
