As we prepare to celebrate Catholic Schools Week this week around the country, I must send a little love to my favorite Catholic school, St. Anthony's here in Fresno. To the teachers and administrators who have so lovingly educated and cared for my boys over the years, you have my greatest gratitude and prayers!
Last week in the House, a measure was passed which praised Catholic schools for their academic accomplishments, education of minority students, and emphasis on values. This week, let's all take time to celebrate those men and women who sacrifice to teach in our Catholic schools and uphold our faith traditions.
This year, the theme for Catholic Schools Week is "Catholic Schools Celebrate Service". I can see in my own children that our wonderful school has instilled in them the concept that serving others is a major part of our lives as Catholics. They have collected food and clothing, helped rebuild a Catholic school in Mississippi following Katrina, supported local shelters and hospitals and participated in countless other service projects during their Catholic school careers. I'm so happy that they have learned the giving and serving are major tenets of our faith and that they have had real life experiences of the joy of serving.
