Today, we celebrate the life of St. Mother Theodore Guerin, foundress of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. A pioneering educator, an advocate for the poor, and a tireless missionary, Saint Mother Guerin was a role model for us in relying upon and trusting in God's providence in our lives. This champion of our Church, canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006, is one of the saints profiled in my new book A Book of Saints for Catholic Moms: 52 Companions for Your Heart, Mind, Body and Soul.

At her canonization, Pope Benedict XVI said of Mother Guerin:

Mother Théodore Guérin is a beautiful spiritual figure and a model of the Christian life. She was always open for the missions the Church entrusted to her, and she found the strength and the boldness to put them [the missions] into practice in the Eucharist, in prayer and in an infinite trust in Divine Providence. Her inner strength moved her to address particular attention to the poor, and above all to children.
