Small Success Thursday

This week I started the hard tackling of cleaning out my oldest son’s room. (He’s a sophomore in college so it’s okay). In addition to going down memory lane (and wishing I’d done this sooner), I found it was more than I could handle. Fortunately, my next son (the one who gets the room), and my husband stepped in to keep me from playing the unhappy martyr and it is now becoming the room it should be for its new occupant.

Over the weekend, we went to a baseball game and mass and dropped off things forgotten at my son’s college. Again, I was starting to feel overwhelmed by what remained to be done when my husband surprised me with Bobby’s Burger Palace Crunchified cheeseburgers. They were delicious. Not good for my diet, but delicious. “You keep trying to do everything. You can’t.” he sagely offered. “But there’s laundry and I need to…” “Come outside.” I did. We spent the afternoon gardening. The laundry still loomed. I started to groan about it when he marshaled the troops to get it done. “You don’t have to do this alone. You shouldn’t have to do this alone.”

The lesson keeps getting repeated because I’m thick about things sometimes. So this week, I’m inviting my children to help with dinner, with laundry, with whathaveyou and I’m going to remind them, we’re not supposed to try to do this alone. So it is a small success if it stays in my head, and a start. I’m also reminded that in reality, I’m never alone. God is always with us, as is the communion of saints. We have a whole heaven of people praying for us, hoping for us, interceding for us, offering us grace if we accept it.

So this week’s theme of small success is community; how we build it, how we need it, how necessary it is for our salvation and our sanity.

This week’s small successes include:

1) Clearing out and moving beds upstairs so that the right people can room together.
2) Assembling a bookshelf for my son’s things.
3) Having a family dinner to celebrate our youngest son’s 4th birthday.
4) Going to mass and staying despite having one of “those masses” when everyone was squirrely.

Now it’s your turn.

Leave your list on your blog and list your blog in the comments or leave your small successes in the comment section itself and thanks for being part of Small Success Thursday!
