Today's Gospel: Mark 4:26-34

“With many such parables he spoke the word to them as they were able to understand it.”

If Jesus had a campaign message it would be that he preached “the Kingdom of God is at hand. “ And if a journalist or observer were to categorize Jesus’ method of preaching, the description would read: “He spoke to them in parables”, stories with riddles and contradictions that contain simple messages as well as deeper meanings.

In its simplest reading, we can immediately see that what is small or hidden is ultimately revealed to be of immense size and value. A small mustard seed becomes a large bush that is not only a marvel in and of itself, but a boon to animals who then find shelter under its shade. One small seed becomes so much more.

Ponder:

Seed scattered and sown grows up as we expect it should. But exactly how does it sprout and grow is not immediately known. The cycle of life from first blade to ripened grain can be seen. The time of the harvest is made evident. But there is still a deeper mystery to the how of it all.

Pray:

Gracious God, Creator of all things seen and unseen,
In the fullness of time you sent us your Only Son
Planted in Mary’s womb and ripened
Because you so loved the world.
Deepen in us an appreciation for the simple and profound
And grow within us your Great Mystery
As we await the Harvest Time and the Kingdom to Come!
