If you're anything like me, you want waaaay more time to read than you actually have. So I bring you these three books (I guess two of them are probably categorized as pamphlets) that won't take any more than five minutes a day (or less). I give them my full thumbs-up!
Saint of the Day: Updated & Expanded, edited by Leonard Foley O.F.M., revised by Pat McCloskey O.F.M. (Franciscan Media, 2013)
I'm a saints junkie, but I'll be honest: I wasn't going to even open this. But that was BEFORE my little attack of "I CAN'T GET ANYTHING READ." I've been following along after I read and pray with the scriptures each morning, and the two minutes it adds onto my devotions is well worth it. Not only do you get a bite-sized bio, but also a comment that's relevant to now, and a prayer or quote or tidbit-type thing, too. Yeah, there are apps that will do this. But sometimes old school is a good way to be.
Here's the official blurb:
This is the 40th anniversary edition of Saint of the Day, first compiled by Leonard Foley, O.F.M., and published in two volumes. Through the years, this popular book has been a go-to source for information on key saints. This seventh revised edition contains the following additions:
- New saints and blesseds such as John of Avila, Hildegard of Bingen, John Henry Newman, and John Paul II.
- An expanded Introduction, with more detail about the current process of canonization.
- Also, background on the evolution of Saint of the Day since the first two volumes, including its recent formats as a daily online resource and as an app.
- A suggested resources section of additional Franciscan Media products with information about saints and blesseds
Saint of the Day has been a trusted guide for forty years, and this latest edition continues the tradition.
A Mother's Bouquet: Rosary Meditations for Moms, by Sherry Boas (Caritas Press, 2004)
When I started using this little booklet, I didn't fully appreciate how helpful and fruitful it would be for my mothering and my rosary-praying. Truly a gem, and one worth keeping on-hand to share.
From the Amazon blurb:
Grow in holiness within the wondrous vocation of motherhood with these rosary meditations written especially for moms.
The Catholic Mom: Nurturing Your Household, by Kathleen Blease (Liguori Publications, 2012)
What's not to love with a title like this? :) Maybe you've heard it all before, but this purse-sized pamphlet is just the thing to (a) give you some wind under your maybe-drooping-a-bit-after-this-winter wings, (b) encourage you in what you're doing (which isn't easy, and we know it), and (c) be a quick don't-feel-like-getting-invested-in-a-book read. Seriously. For under $2, you can't go wrong. Wait, yes you can. But with THIS, you won't!
From the blurbage:
A pamphlet for Catholic Moms looking to better the spiritual direction of their household.
