I'll take my chocolate NOW, thankyouverymuch. And I read a book that was like a fine bar of chocolate this week...I wasn't sure I'd finish it, but lo! I did! And there was much rejoicing!

I've also been considering my Lenten reads. In fact, I have sort of committed to them, so you'll be hearing the play-by-play a bit about them too in these weekly posts.

So, before I even start, feel free to pipe up with YOUR Lenten reads in the comments. :)

Slubgrip Instructs: Fifty Days with the Devil, by Dwight Longenecker (Stauffer Books, 2015, fiction)

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Yes, it's true. A well-known, highly published, and hugely popular Catholic priest is encouraging all of us to spend Lent with the devil. And I can tell you, having had a taste of the journey, that it's one that will be well-worth the effort.

Fr. Dwight Longenecker, whose wisdom graces the webpages of many well-esteemed Catholic sites (including his own very popular blog, Standing on My Head), has released a new book that is designed to take you on a journey through Lent with none other than the devil himself.

Slubgrip Instructs: Fifty Days with the Devil, while a sequel to Longenecker's Gargoyle Code, stands alone and does the "make you think twice about everything in your life" job quite nicely.

It's a fast read if you sit down to read it, but I would encourage you to take your copy (because, I assure you, you need one!) and savor it. Consider what's written and how popular culture is truly impacting you. It's not an easy truth to face.

I Am Margaret, by Corrina Turner (fiction, UnSeen Books, 2014)

So much for finishing it last week, huh? But I blame Slubgrip, which isn't quite the same as blaming the devil...but has the same wonderful ring to it.

I've decided I cannot give up on this book. I CANNOT. But it has been slow going for me, indeed.

cover-four cardinal virtues pieper

The Four Cardinal Truths, by Josef Pieper (University of Notre Dame Press, 1966) (for the Catholic Spiritual Direction book club)

This week, reading on Justice. It was a real eye-opener for me, and I actually wrote about it over at Catholic Spiritual Direction today. This book will actually add to my Lenten reading quite nicely, I suppose, and I think I'm past the point of fearing for my brain exploding. Who knew the virtues could be so interesting? (And so in-depth?)
