Today's Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20

Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

Today, as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, we read the powerful conclusion of the Gospel according to Matthew. We find ourselves high atop a mountain in Galilee with the eleven disciples. Perhaps we can relate to the fact that “they saw him, they worshipped, but they doubted.”

Having so recently celebrated Easter and with its season still warm in our hearts, how quickly we too might forget the certainty with which we proclaimed, “Alleluia,” in worship on Easter Sunday. We have seen him in the Eucharist, we have worshipped, and yet too often we doubt.

At the conclusion of this passage, the disciples are commissioned, sent forth to baptize all nations in the name of the Trinity. Jesus assures his loved ones of his eternal presence with them. We share in the knowledge as he says to us, “Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

By nature of our own baptism as priest, prophet, and king and sure in the certainty of God’s eternal presence in our lives, we too are sent forth to the ends of the earth to win souls for heaven. For many of us, our “commission” plays out in the confines of our homes, our places of employment, and our communities. But our being sent, our commissioning, is at the heart of our lives as Christians.

How do you consider yourself to be commissioned by Christ? How do you live out this commission?

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
