There are so many expectations put upon us in our society. We are expected to look, act, think, respond, and be a certain way depending upon our heritage, family, social status, or where we were raised. We make generalizations about people constantly forgetting that each person is an individual given talents, specific characteristics, and a God-given purpose for existence.
We are each a child of God. When we look in the mirror we need to see the person whom God created in His very own image. We need to embrace that person, discern that purpose, and take him/her into the world to do the work of God. We need to show the world who we are by our actions, words, thoughts, kindness, selflessness, and unconditional love.
Are we ready to take that first step by looking in the mirror and searching for the "me" that is hidden deep within the expectations of our world? It is a difficult task to ask someone to look beyond the surface and listen to God discerning our life's calling. However, if we can't do that then we can't show the world who God wants us to be.
It is a process of self-discovery. It won't happen in a day or a week, it can take years to discover and over years you may discern different paths. But it starts with looking the first time, praying for guidance, and being honest with the answers.
Are you ready to let yourself see the person beyond the reflection? Try to look today and see who you see.
