Daily Gospel Reflection for December 31, 2015

Today's Gospel: John 1:1-18

I can think of no passage more beautiful or profound than the beginning to John’s Gospel. As we slip from one calendar year to the next, we also sit deep within the Christmas season, where the seed planted and harvested through Advent has now broken into the world. The ripples and import of salvation history are all expressed quite poetically in today’s Gospel.

And what more fitting time to hear Genesis echoed again than now. This is the beginning of things anew. This is also the testimony that from the very beginning, God made the world good and alive in the light.

Ponder:

New Year’s resolutions may come and go. What remains is the truth that darkness overcomes light. What is true is that new beginnings are possible; they can be change for the better. And ultimately, though life winds down to its end, death is not the end.

Pray:

Resolve in us, O Lord,
That our endings and beginnings
May be rooted in your Word,
That your light may shine forth,
And we may be drawn to it.
Darkness falls away,
And we are witnesses
To Life, To Light, to Truth.
