“Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people.” (Jeremiah 7:23-28; emphasis mine)   “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” (Psalm 95; emphasis mine)
Learning to hear God’s voice in today’s noise is a struggle for me. My deafness may be due in part to the cacophony of the world. Social media, news, entertainment all play a factor in keeping me from hearing God’s voice in my life. The other part is laziness. I don’t take the time to listen. I pray, I mutter to myself, I shake my fists at the heavens and I stamp my feet demanding to be heard, yet when it comes to listening to God, I appear to be deaf. My heart does feel hardened. Psalm 95 tells me to sing joyfully to the Lord, to acclaim the Rock of our salvation and to come into his presence with thanksgiving. In that moment, I knew what to do to hear His voice.
